There is a library of reports in Open Dental to get you the data you need to manage your practice. And if a standard report doesn’t exist, we have a thousands of customized user queries to get you the information you need.
Reports
Standard Reports are available from the Reports dropdown in the Main Menu. Below is information on several of the most crucial reports for managing your practice.

Reports to Manage Payments and Production
Production and Income
There are multiple Production and Income Reports in Open Dental to get you the data you want with the detail you need. Quickly run a report with default settings using the options (Today, Last Month) in the Production and Income section of Standard Reports or click More Options to customize date ranges and report type.
Payments Report and Adjustments Report
Use the Payments Report to track and view all the payments you’ve received in a date range to determine your gross income and easily see payments by type. Use the Adjustments Report to see all the adjustments you’ve made and filter by type if you want to easily know how much you’ve adjusted for a certain reason (like a discount plan).
Procedures Report
The Procedures Report makes it a breeze to see the gross fees from procedures and you can even run the report “Grouped by Procedure Code” to get counts of procedures completed in the date range, so you know what kind of work your practice is completing most (or least).
Patient Portion Uncollected
If you want to know which patients didn’t pay their portion at the end of the day, use the Patient Portion Uncollected Report. It’ll show you any procedures that still have a patient portion due, so you can reach out to patients for payment or make sure that payments get attached to the procedures.
Unfinalized Insurance Payments
Unfinalized insurance payments won’t show up on the Production and Income or Payments Reports, so run the Unfinalized Insurance Payments Report to find any claims that were received, but don’t have a finalized payment attached, that way you can make sure your other reports are accurate.
Aging of A/R
Your practice wants to make sure they’re getting payment for any treatment rendered, so the Aging of A/R is a crucial report to track accounts that have balances and determine how much payment you still have outstanding.
Reports to Manage Insurance Claims
Claims Not Sent
If a claim was created, but not sent, it will show up on the Claims Not Sent Report . This is a great way to track secondary claims that still need to be sent or claims that are in process (grouped with other treatment not yet complete) and make sure they’re not ready to be sent. This is distinct from the Send Claims window from the Manage Module, as this will only show claims with the Waiting to Send status.
Outstanding Claims
Insurance isn’t always timely when they make payment, so use the Outstanding Claims Report to keep on to of any claims that were sent and may need follow-up. Easily enter the claim status from the report, so you know what going on with the claim or why there may be delays.
Procs Not Billed to Ins
In order for insurance to pay you, you have to create a claim. The Procedures Not Billed to Insurance Report will help you find any procedures that may have slipped through the cracks. You can even quickly create claims from the report window!
Reports to Manage Treatment
Incomplete Procedure Notes
Procedure notes are crucial to maintaining a patient’s chart and record of treatment. Use the Incomplete Procedure Notes report to find missing or incomplete notes.
Treatment Finder
If you’ve got a schedule availability you want to fill, but aren’t looking for recall appointments to schedule, use the Treatment Finder Report. You can search for specific procedures to schedule, filter patients with remaining benefits and filter by provider, so you make sure you’re finding the correct patients to schedule in an opening.
Queries
If you’re looking for more niche information, that’s where queries come in. We have a library of queries we’ve created from customer requests over the years.
Searching for Queries
On the Query Examples page, you can limit the queries listed by selecting options from the “Return Queries About” filters. When selecting these, the queries shown must match all of the selected filters. For example, if you want to find reports about new patient appointments, you can select “New Patient” and “Appointment”, but if you separately want to see queries about new patients and queries about appointments, you’ll just want to set one filter and do separate searches.
This infographic has more on how to search for and use a Query.
TECH TIP: Use CTRL+F to search queries by keyword. To eliminate the raw query text from being included in your keyword search, click Hide Query Details.

Running Queries
Once you’ve found a query you want to run in Open Dental, copy the query text and paste it into the User Query window. If the query has variables (like a date range), you can change those in the query text. Alternatively, save the query to Query Favorites and run it from here. When you do, you’ll be prompted to update any variables.

Saving a query as a favorite also makes it easy to access it when you want to run it again in the future.
If none of the queries match what you are looking for, you can request a quote for a custom query.
