Using Definitions in Open Dental

definitions

There are many ways to customize Open Dental just for your practice. In this post, we’ll be looking at Definitions. Definitions can be used to create custom categories, colors, types, and more throughout different areas of Open Dental.

All definitions can be found under Setup > Definitions.

Select a definitions category on the left hand side to begin making edits.

Payment Types

There are a number of definitions that are more popular than others. One of the most used definitions is Payment Types.

Payment Types are used when taking a Patient Payment. You can have as many payment types as needed.

For example, you can have one category for Credit Card payments, or a category for each Credit Card Type (e.g. VISA, MasterCard, AmericanExpress).

When running the Daily Payments Report, each category will list separately when All Payment Types are selected. Or, you can run the report for each type individually.

Image Categories

Image Categories allow you to name and organize folders in the Imaging Module. Edit names, hide unused folders, and re-order folders as needed.

These categories display on the left of the Imaging Module.

Appt Confirmed

The Appt Confirmed category lists appointment confirmation types and the associated colors.

Note: By default, the top most confirmation will be used for newly created appointments.

Typically the appointment confirmation status displays in the upper right of an appointment.

Appt Procs Quick Add

Appt Procs Quick Adds are the single-click items in the Edit Appointment window.

Note: Procedures associated with an Appt Proc Quick Add should not contain tooth numbers.

When creating an appointment, use the Appt Procs Quick Adds to quickly chart procedures for the patient and attach them to the appointment.
