Protecting Your Practice: How to Vet Integrations

It can be exciting to see a new software that claims to integrate with your existing practice management software and has claims of improving your workflow, but it’s important to ensure that any integration you’re using interacts with your data safely and securely. There are several integrations types you may run across when looking for supplemental software. This post will go over the various types to help you be able to make more informed decisions when choosing which integrations to use.

Native Integrations

These may be called different things depending on the practice management software you use, but this is any software whose integration is built in direct collaboration with the PMS development team. This type of software is generally more well-supported by your PMS in addition to the integrated software. This is because your PMS helped to develop the integration. These types of integrations are generally the safest.

Open Dental offers several native integrations, including payment processors, clearinghouses, AI image analysis, and more.

API Integrations

Some PMS, like Open Dental, have an API that developers can use to create their own integration. API is a framework that determines how one software can interact with another. This type of integration doesn’t normally involve the PMS working on the development of the integration, but rather requires the integration to follow certain rules in order to interact with your data.

Several developers already offer an API integration with Open Dental and even more are in development. See our website for a list.

Non-API Integrations

Some companies may create integrations that circumvent any API or other standards set forth by the PMS. These integrations can often be dangerous. Common issues include data corruption and slowness. It is best to steer clear of these types of integrations when possible.
