As you navigate Open Dental, you know that mouse-clicks take an action (like editing, saving, or exiting), and double-clicking opens items. In this post, we’re going to help you harness the power of right-click options in Open Dental.
These are some that will help boost efficiency and productivity, but there are others within the program. Leave a comment below with your favorite!
Appointments Module
The Appointments Module offers many right-click options:
- On a blank area in the schedule, edit Blockouts, or text patients on the ASAP list or with appointments that day.
- On an appointment, handle actions specific to the patient or appointment.

Account Module
On a procedure, or after highlighting multiple procedures, right-click to quickly add an adjustment!
Right-click a payment to issue a refund. The payment splits are automatically created to match the original payment, so there’s no guesswork (or manual work) needed to create the payment splits.
Chart Module
Right-clicking in the Progress Notes in the Chart Module offers many quick actions.
The options that appear on each right-click depend on what type of item you’re clicking on. For example, on a completed procedure, it offers Group Note options.
On a treatment-planned procedure, it offers options to complete, delete, or set the status of the procedure.
Additionally, if you highlight, multiple procedures, you can select the option to Edit All to quickly update the provider, procedure date, and clinic on the procedures. This is especially helpful if procedures are accidentally charted on the wrong day or for the incorrect provider as they can quickly be updated.

Lists and Reports
In reports that open in a new window rather than a print preview, there are right-click options to quickly go to a patient’s account and other options unique to the report. Similar right-click options are available for lists, like the Recall List, Billing List, and more.
