We do not recommend a cut and paste.
Training your team on how to properly set up the templates, prompts and answer/options and how to use the templates requires time and patience. Be sure to add the prompts for options to customize your clinical notes for the patient. Each provider may develop their own templates and most software programs also allow you to use a group note.
Of course, we’re not saying don’t copy and paste, but if you’re doing this – you have to be hyper-aware of replacing each section of information with the current patient’s. It is not efficient and there’s simply more of a risk of errors that could cost you.

Create Auto Notes in Open Dental and use them as a checklist for important data you collect.
Auto Notes are a combination of preset text and prompts. When inserting an Auto Note into a procedure note (or Commlog, etc.) you’ll get the chance to answer the prompts. Depending on how the Auto Note was set up, you may have a list of answers to choose from or you can type in an answer. If you need to, you can exit the prompt and return to the Auto Note later to finish the prompts.
If any details of the Auto Note are not applicable, the Note Text can be edited freely by typing in the box. Once you’ve exited the Compose Auto Note window, you can also edit the Auto Note text from the text box of wherever you’ve inserted the Auto Note (e.g., Procedure Note, Commlog, etc.)
Use Quick Paste Notes can be used to quickly insert text you type often.
Quick Paste Notes are great for inserting shorter form notes or text that is added to notes frequently. In Quick Paste Notes setup, you can create abbreviations to have keyboard shortcuts for inserting the Quick Paste Note text. Unlike Auto Notes, Quick Paste Notes do not have prompts, so text is inserted exactly.
