If you’ve run reports in Open Dental, you’ve probably seen the Standard Production and Income report. You may even know you can run it in different ways, such as when you want to see every procedure for a day, every day for a month, or every month for a year. This report can be super handy, but did you know the options don’t stop there? Open Dental has the option to run User Queries, which are custom reports that can give you even more detailed information. So, whether you want to see more information on your production and income report, or you simply want to know what your options are, read further to see what our favorites are, selected by the experts.
What is a User Query?
Before we jump into our favorite ones, let’s answer that burning question. What is a user query? In the simplest terms, it is a custom report designed to display exactly the information you are looking for.
For those technically inclined, a user query is a series of commands written to display specific information from the Open Dental database. All of our User Query Examples are written by Open Dental query experts. They know exactly which commands to add to reference the data you are looking for!
Our Favorites
We asked our query experts what their favorite custom reports are, and they delivered. Stay tuned for a future post with different types of these reports, but here are some of the favorites related to production and income.
Some things to keep in mind if you are looking at these reports:
- These queries may give different results than the built-in Production and Income report in Open Dental. The information is being processed differently, but that doesn’t mean one is more accurate than the other!
- Each of these reports require payments and adjustments to be properly allocated to procedures in order to function correctly.
- Each of the reports listed below can be run on any version of MySQL or MariaDB and any version of Open Dental.
Query Example #1629 Production and Income by Procedure Code
Not only does this report give you production and income for a date range, it also gives you a breakdown by procedure and procedure category. This is useful if you are trying to determine your most productive procedures and which ones are paid on more or less often. Keep in mind this report does require payments to be properly allocated to procedures to give the most accurate results.
Query Example #1615 Procedure Level Production and Income by Provider
The photo doesn’t do this report justice. This query gives so much information that the screenshot has been modified to show some of the more pertinent fields it provides. In addition to what you see above, you can also see the date, patient name, primary carrier, and secondary insurance information. This is a great daily report that providers can use to see their estimated daily pay.
Query Example #1593 Production and Income By Primary Carrier Per Procedure Code
Every time you run this report, you can decide whether you see it broken down by procedure code, or only see the totals for each carrier. This can be helpful if you are trying to decide if you want to go out of network with certain carriers, or even what kind of work is being done most often under each carrier.
Query Example #1689 Production and Income by Primary Insurance Carrier
This report gives you production and income broken down by primary insurance carrier, and can optionally filter even further by group name and/or group number. You can filter this report with those criteria or to even just see specific procedures codes. This can be really handy to find which insurance carriers are the most profitable for your office.

How To Find More User Queries
These are just a sampling of some of the production and income related user query examples we have available. To see the full list of all our queries, visit our User Query Examples page. Here are some tips for Searching for Query Examples, but it’s important to remember not all of the reports can be run on your database. Some have limitations based on MySQL/MariaDB or Open Dental version. If you’re not sure if the report can be run on your database, we’re here to help!
If you want to see more queries related to production or income, here are a few more common options that can be found on the examples page above:
- Query 1523 – List of carriers with claim payments in the date range. Includes patient payments for patients with and without insurance claims during the date range
- Note: On this report, patient payments are listed in two rows: “uninsured patient payments” and “insured patient payments”. Which row the payment falls into is based on if there is a claim with a date of service in the date range.
- Query 1525 – List of carriers with claim payments in the date range
- Note: This report shows similar information to Query 1523 but handles the patient payment differently. Patient payments are counted under the primary carrier if the patient payment is allocated to a procedure attached to a primary claim. Otherwise, if a primary claim doesn’t exist or the patient payment isn’t allocated, then it counts under Self Pay.
- Query 1535 – Payments made in the specified date range and clinic(s) on procedures completed prior to the cutoff date
- Note: This report works well for finding payments made on procedures that were done in a certain time frame. A common example is when a provider leaves a practice and payments come in for the work they completed prior to leaving.
- Query 1561 – Payments in the date range attached to one of the specified providers, clinics and procedure codes
- Query 1593 – Production and income by carrier per procedure code
- Query 1615 – Procedure level production and income, with estimates, for specified providers
- Query 1629 – Production and income by procedure code, for procedures completed in the date range
